Ross McKitrick, Department of Economics, University of Guelph, Canada: Historically there have been three broad ways of viewing the natural world. Primitive cultures viewed it as a personal entity with a mind of its own. Biblical cultures view it as the work of a Supreme creator. Modern secularists view it as a random, uncreated entity. Does Nature Have Intrinsic Value?

John Shanahan, civil engineer, President of Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA: Here are some mountain memories. Reflect on the importance in modern living for getting out in nature. Think of the fossil fuels that are needed to travel to these places, to build the airplanes, boats and 4-wheel drive vehicles, to manufacture the high tech equipment and clothing, and to produce the freeze dried mountain food. Extreme environmentalists claim they need to save the world from catastrophic, out of control, global warming by insisting that everyone stop using fossil fuels. Don't go to the mountains. What kind of a world will it be with only energy from windmills and solar panels manufactured by the energy from other windmills, etc. And lastly, the materials for the windmills would have to be mined by energy from windmills or use wooden windmills. Other extreme environmentalists claim that the whole world can go nuclear in 50 to 100 years. Do you want to bet you life savings on that? The world desperately needs good government and sound energy planning with fossil fuels and nuclear.

John Shanahan, civil engineer, President of Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA: People should spend as much time as possible observing nature, whether in potted plants and pets at home, in parks and gardens in the city, on walks near lakes and oceans, in hill country, mountains, nearby or around the world. It is so much more exciting than searching for information and playing games on cell phones and computers and spending hours watching the same stuff every day on TV.

Acorn Creek Trail is a favorite early morning summer hiking trail in Summit County, Colorado when the wildflowers are all in bloom. At lower levels there are desert flowers, higher up meadows of mountain wildflowers, on top a profusion of arctic tundra flowers close to the ground. This is the world that we must preserve and enjoy along with life for most of us in large cities.

Fritz Vahrenholt, PhD Chemistry, Chairman, German Wildlife Foundations: What was demanded in the Green Party program in 1986, the abolition of the nuclear industry, the automotive industry and parts of the chemical industry, has long since become consensus in the middle of society. How could that succeed? With apocalyptic horror scenarios, the cleavage of the atom, as well as the slight increase of the vital molecule CO2 in the atmosphere, become ciphers of disaster. What country, what state will lead the world to the bottom of the reliable, environmentally sound energy policy: Germany, California? What countries will be outstanding sound energy program leaders: Canada, China, France, Jordan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea?
