Jim Leonard, mechanical engineer, educator: The United States has been a leader in world peace and economic growth for a long time. It has made mistakes that should be acknowledged and corrected. Starting in 2017, the President has made it very clear that he considers himself and his policies better than many citizens and nations. This is a unique situation in the history of the United States and has upset relations with many countries and people around the world. This article concisely describes the situation and suggests what should be done. Nuclear power requires political leadership, a well run economy, good schools and universities. The United States has a lot of improvement to do. It won't happen with a president acting with little regard for most of the rest of the government, a very large percent of its citizens and disrespect for other countries.
John Shanahan, President of Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA: As far as we know, Earth is the only place in the universe with the right climate, atmosphere, water, land, plants, animals, birds and creatures in the oceans to sustain life in all its beauty. People think that Paradise is peaceful and harmonious. But frequently humans are at serious odds with each other. There are people in many walks of life working for peace, strong economies and human dignity. That has never been enough. Many parts of the world are under the influence of leaders or whole governments scheming how to put down other peoples and countries. Some countries are under the influence of people who predict that the world is coming to an end. They want to impose their solutions on everyone. This essay highlights a few scientists and engineers working for a better world overall using science not beliefs or ideologies.
Mike Dunigan, John Shanahan - alumni, University of Notre Dame: Planet Earth is such a magnificent, unique place in the universe with amazing life from the tiniest creatures to the largest mammals, fish, plants and forests. Most special, humanity. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hatred and cruelty also. The story of Native Americans helping people in Europe in the 1800s as European-Americans were stealing and slowly killing Native Americans is very unusual. If the world is to make best use of nuclear power, it needs peace, opportunity for prosperity for all, good education and sound government. A hugely disproportionate distribution of all of the wealth of the planet (natural resources, prime land, monetary assets) in the hands of a few is not a long-term, workable solution.
John Shanahan, Dr. Ing., Civil Engineer, President of Environmentalists for Nuclear - USA: This is a short essay with photos explaining how men and women improved the original natural conditions of a semi-arid climate with just short prairie grass to a thriving large urban area in Metro Denver, Colorado, USA with abundant varieties of beautiful trees, bushes, flowers. The Romans did this 2000 years ago. The Chinese, Japanese, Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, Europeans, people in the Middle East, Russia and India also did this long before the people of Denver did it. With better government, setting a goal of peaceful coexistence and plentiful energy, these tremendous improvements can be made throughout the rest of the world and hopefully end conflicts and wars. Metro Denver, Colorado has people from all over the world living here peacefully together, happy and prospering.
